Mountain hazards

Mountain weather hazards

Hazards apply at or above 300m, reflecting the more severe conditions which can occur at altitude.

hazard Heavy Persistent Rain
Heavy and persistent rain can lead to drenched clothing and footwear with waterproofs often becoming soaked through, especially if accompanied by strong winds. This can lead to significant loss of body heat and an increased likelihood of hypothermia. Terrain may turn increasingly boggy underfoot while streams can flood and become impassable. There may also be a risk of flooding in valleys or glens. If there is snow cover, a heightened avalanche hazard is possible and avalanche reports should be consulted where available.

hazard Poor Visibility
Poor visibility presents challenging route finding conditions. Visibility could be significantly less than 50 metres in all directions with few or no visual references, especially on featureless moors or plateaux. Distances become hard to judge and cliff or cornice edges can be difficult to recognise. These conditions require good navigational skills. There is a risk of white-out conditions when mist or fog is combined with extensive snow cover.

Mountain weather forecast

Somewhat cloudy in the morning. Heavy rain in the afternoon and evening.

Additional weather information

Met Office Aberdeen meteorologist's view

Heavy persistent rain in the evening will provide soaking conditions in addition to potentially slippery pathways and some fast-flowing watercourses.

Weather

Generally dry with some clear spells towards coastal and island ranges through the morning. However, some patchy low cloud with mist or hill fog and outbreaks of light drizzle in the Trossachs and Glen Coe, or some isolated mist or fog patches forming overnight in prone valleys. This will gradually lift and break through the morning, with perhaps some bright spells around midday. Heavy showery rain begins to break out in the afternoon, becoming widespread and persistent through the evening, particularly for north-facing upslopes.

Chance of cloud-free hill tops

Generally 50% from the morning to midday, the best chances in the west towards the islands and coastal ranges. Falling to 20 or less % through the evening.

Low cloud and visibility

Patches of low cloud combined with mist, light drizzle or fog from valley level up to 300m in the morning. This lifts and breaks to allow generally clear summits and some clearer breaks through the middle of the day. Cloud becomes more extensive later with some patchy or broken cloud bases down to 600-700m and very poor visibilities in heavy persistent rain.
