Depending on roles here are some typical technical and soft skills expected on recruitment.

Software Developer role

Essential criteria

• Demonstrable evidence of IT skills and an enthusiasm for working in the IT arena

• An ability to grasp fresh concepts quickly and to apply them in implementing practical solutions

• Proven ability to identify, investigate, diagnose and resolve technical problems in a timely manner

• Evidence of successfully organising your own workload and of committing to and meeting deadlines

• Proven ability to participate in a team environment but also to be able to work independently on allocated tasks

• Enthusiasm for providing a professional, high-quality service

• Ability to communicate clearly and constructively with customers and colleagues

Desirable criteria

• Any previous experience of working in an IT development role

• Experience of working with any of the following technologies: Java, Flex, Javascript, Oracle

Senior Software Developer role

Essential criteria

• A qualification in computer science, computing or other numerate subject, or equivalent experience

• Demonstrable experience of using Java to develop business solutions

• Demonstrable knowledge and experience of analysing, designing and developing software

• An ability to grasp fresh concepts quickly and to apply them in implementing efficient and practical  solutions

• Proven ability to identify, investigate, diagnose and resolve difficult technical problems in a timely manner

• Evidence of successfully organising your own workload and of committing to and delivering against challenging deadlines

• Enthusiasm for working in the IT arena and providing a professional, high-quality service

• Ability to communicate easily, enthusiastically and professionally with a range of customers and to work effectively as part of a team

Desirable criteria

• Experience of using UML and XML

• Experience of using Flex or Javascript to develop user interfaces

• Familiarity with OGC and RESTful web services

• Experience of working with an application server (e.g. JBoss, Oracle AS, etc.)

• Experience of working with Oracle databases and access techniques

• Wider IT knowledge of hardware, storage technologies and/or networks

• Experience of following formal development processes, particularly agile processes

Technical skills will vary from role to role but in general all roles will expect excellent written and oral communication including ability to explain technical issues to non-technical people, good analytical skills, including problem solving, ability to work well within a team but also be able to work on your own using your initative.
