Our objectives and targets for FY 2011/12

We have outlined our objectives and targets for this current financial year based upon our strategy, our corporate policies and last year's performance.

Our sustainability objectives and targets for 2011/12

Our environment
Reduce CO2 emissions from our supercomputer (per teraflop) by 25%.
Reduce total Met Office CO2 emissions (excluding supercomputer) by 1.5%, which incorporates energy consumption across the whole estate, business air travel and other forms of business travel (including grey fleet).

Achieve our 2011/12 Environment Management System Objectives that include to:

- reduce water consumption at our Exeter HQ (combined sources, offices only by 5%); 

- reduce waste sent to landfill from our Exeter HQ by 5%;

- reduce paper consumption within our Exeter HQ by 5%;

- increase levels of recycling from waste generated at our Exeter HQ to 77% recycled;

- achieve external recognition of biodiversity management at our Exeter HQ by achieving the Wildlife Trusts' Biodiversity benchmark;

- extend biodiversity management within the Met Office estate by implementing a pilot diversity management scheme at a frontline site.

Continue to implement the 'Green IT' policy in line with Government best practice and the EU Code of Conduct for Data Centre Efficiency for which the Met Office has signed up, including implementing a power management regime for our Exeter HQ Windows desktop estate.
Our suppliers and customers
Pay 80% of valid invoices within 5 working days.
Achieve Level 2 - embedded under the Flexible Framework to ensure the met office procurement of goods and services is more sustainable, ethical and efficient.
Use our customer experience feedback mechanism and regular customer surveys to seek and respond to customer feedback.
Respond to requests under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 within the time limit stipulated (20 working days).
Deal with requests under the Data Protection Act 1998 within required time limits (40 calendar days).
Our people

Offer 30 work experience placements during the year.

Establish a baseline for the Met Office by completing a diversity benchmark.
Continue to understand and improve employee management and well-being and measure through the Civil Service Employee Attitude Survey.
Our community
Promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Ambassadorship and increase the number of staff who are STEM Ambassadors from 9 to 20 by the end of FY 2011/12.
Fulfil a minimum of 20 requests for visits or talks to/from school and college groups
Offer our conference facilities to community groups or charities a minimum of 4 times per year.
Fulfil a minimum of 12 requests for visit by community groups or charities to engage with staff at Exeter.
Deliver 7 out of 8 Voluntary Cooperation Programme targets within +/- 2% of budget by the end of FY 2011/12, which include, for example, developing a sustainable Public Weather Service (PWS) in the developing countries in which we work, through TV media projects / PWS Advisor training.
