The weather has a serious impact on aviation. Whether you're
operating large commercial jets, light aircraft, balloons
or hang-gliders, having fast and easy access to accurate weather
intelligence is a vital prerequisite. This is why we offer
a comprehensive range of services to aviation in the UK and
around the world. Our aim is to help improve the efficiency
and safety of flight operations - in a cost-effective way.
- Products and services are specifically designed for civil
aviation use, and have been developed in close liaison with
customers
- We are one of only two designated World Area Forecast
Centres (WAFCs) - as such, we've been providing forecasts
for international aviation flights since 1984.
- We provide tailored services to the UK Civil Aviation
Authority (CAA) and commercial organisations worldwide
- The CAA, as the UK meteorological authority for aviation,
also negotiates services on behalf of airlines
- The internet enables us to deliver products that are
precisely more tailored to the needs of individual customers

We provide services in two key areas
- International aviation (such as commercial international
airlines)
- UK national aviation (including national airline operations,
light aircraft and general aviation)
Much of our work is carried out under contract to National
Air Traffic Services (NATS), which currently forms part of
the CAA. We also provide services on a commercial basis.
UK national services include Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts
(TAFs) that forecast conditions at airports, warn of severe
weather, and include and a range of regional and low-level
forecasts. We also provide a tailored service to offshore
helicopter operators, plus a recognised observer training
programme for air traffic control staff.
We visit airports to inspect facilities and ensure that the
weather reports they generate (METARs) are of an appropriate
standard. And we provide information to the Air Accident Investigation
Bureau (AAIB) to help with accident investigations.
