The following represents a provisional assessment of the weather experienced across the UK during Autumn 2012 (September, October, November) and how it compares with the 1981 to 2010 average.
The mean temperature for the UK in Autumn was 8.6 °C, or 0.8 °C below average. Temperatures were 0.7 °C below average during September, 1.3 °C below during October, and 0.4 °C below during November. It was the coldest September since 1994 and the coldest Autumn overall since 1993.
The UK had 374.4mm or 111% of average rainfall; while Scotland had 93% of average, England and Wales received 131% making it the wettest Autumn since 2000 for England and the 9th wettest Autumn in the series from 1910. Rainfall over the UK was above average (117%) in September, but this marked some strong divisions across the country.
It was the wettest September across northern England since 2000, but in contrast there was below normal rain in East Anglia and across parts of eastern Scotland. October was also very close to normal for the UK as a whole (101%) but parts of the south and east received greater than 150% of average and the north and west less than 75%. November saw more than 150% of average widely in a swathe from south-west to north-east England, associated with a succession of rain events between 20th and 27th that brought widespread disruption across many parts of England and Wales. Northern Ireland and north-east Scotland were drier than average.
Autumn 2012 was provisionally the 8th sunniest in the series from 1929 with 109% of average. September was a notably sunny month with 116% of average sunshine for the UK, but some western areas were nearer average. October was dull across the south-eastern half of England, but above normal for most of Northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. November had above average sunshine across all regions, notably Scotland.
