Synoptic situation

Synoptic situation A deep low pressure area as shown on the synoptic chart, was reponsible for producing stormy conditions over much of the UK, with Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England experiencing the worst of the conditions.

Heavy rainfall was also associated with the low pressure, with stations in north-west Scotland reporting over an inch of rain in the 24 hour period ending 0900Z on the 29 January 2002.

Cairngorm - The last mean wind speed over 80 kn at Cairngorm was on 22/02/1997, when 94 kn was reported.

Great Dun Fell - 79 kn was also recorded on 3/12/1999.

Leuchars - The 2nd highest mean wind speed at Leuchars with data going back to 1969.

Tiree - Highest since 19/02/1997, when 52 kn was reported.

Boulmer - The 2nd highest mean wind speed at Boulmer with data going back to 1975.

Edinburgh - There was a site change at Edinburgh in 1999, with Turnhouse ( height 35m ) being closed and a nearby site opening at Gogarbank. Last hourly mean wind speed over 40 m.p.h. from either of these stations was back in 1957 ( this was at the Turnhouse location ).
