Heavy rainfall/thunderstorms

Synoptic situation

An area of low pressure and associated troughs and fronts were responsible for heavy rainfall/thunderstorms over much of the UK, especially on 30 July 2002 and 1st August 2002.

The Marham 24 hour period rainfall value of 83.4 mm was the highest since records began in 1957, previous highest 24 hour total was 61.2 mm on 30 August 1976.
The Marham 12 hour period rainfall value of 46.2 mm was the 3rd highest since records began in 1957, 49.5 mm was recorded during a 12 hour period on 30 August 1976 and 50.9 mm during a 12 hour period on 10 July 1959.

The Waddington 24 hour period rainfall value of 72.8 mm was the highest since records began in 1949, previous highest 24 hour total was 56.0 mm on 15 July 1973.
The Waddington 12 hour period rainfall value of 59.6 mm was the highest since records began in 1949, previous highest 12 hour total was 49.4 mm on 14 August 1980.

The Leeming 24 hour period rainfall value of 91.2 mm was the highest since records began in 1965, previous highest 24 hour total was 64.9 mm on 22 June 1982.
The Leeming 12 hour period rainfall value of 80.6 mm was the highest since records began in 1965, previous highest 12 hour total was 53.0 mm on 15 June 2001.

The Fylingdales 24 hour period rainfall value of 114.6 mm was the highest since records began in 1984, previous highest 24 hour total was 75.2 mm on 13 September 1993.
The Fylingdales 12 hour period rainfall value of 84.0 mm was the highest since records began in 1984, previous highest 12 hour total was 61.2 mm on 8 December 1990.
