A very wet start

October has got off to a very wet start in many parts of the UK.

Worst affected are East Sussex, West Sussex and Kent where up to one and a half times the average month's rain has fallen already.

This map shows the rainfall in millimetres that has fallen between 1 and 11 October. This map shows the rainfall expressed as a percentage of the average month's rainfall amount.

At Herstmonceux in East Sussex 103.4 mm of rain fell in the 3 day period 9-11 October, a once-in-48-year event. Further along the coast at Thorney Island 79.8 mm fell in the same period, a once-in-23-year event. West Freugh in the Stranraer area of south-west Scotland also experienced heavy rainfall with 121.6 mm falling between 9 and 10 October, a once-in-311-year event.
