CCM 2005 programme
Each conference session will have an introduction followed by breakout groups in charge of discussing particular issues and setting up actions to resolve/improve them.

Introduction - the issues to be discussed and the aims of the conference

  • Welcome and summary of achievements since last CCM
    David Rogers, Met Office
  • Aims and objectives of the conference
    Michel Jarraud (WMO)
  • Open discussion on programme and issues to be addressed
1130 First session: Working together to improve risk assessment and vulnerability mapping
Aim: to use national expertise to identify the main regional issues for focused prevention/response to disasters, including socio-economic perspective of risk areas.

Three introductory talks to identify issues for discussion.

First session (cont.): Group discussions
Break up into three groups to discuss the issues:

  • Group 1: Socio-economic benefits and cost-benefit analysis
  • Group 2: Impacts (short range to climate change)
  • Group 3: Links between science and users
1645 First session (cont.): Reconvene as whole group
Bring together the ideas from the three different groups, discuss the main issues and agree on what would be a useful outcome from the discussions, for instance setting up collaborating pilot projects.

Second session: Working together to improve monitoring and forecasting
Aim: Highlight the advances in monitoring and forecasting as well as areas where development is needed so that they can be worked upon.

Five introductory talks to identify issues for discussion.

Second session (cont.): Group discussions
Break up into three groups to discuss the issues:

  • Group 1: Collaboration between scientists
  • Group 2: How can developing NMHSs improve their capabilities by building on developed NMHSs
  • Group 3: Operational exchange of warnings
1415 Second session (cont.): Reconvene as whole group
Bring together the ideas from the three different groups, discuss the main issues and agree on what would be a useful outcome from the discussions.
1545 Third session: Working together to improve dissemination
Aim: To improve awareness of the importance of the dissemination process both for safety of life and business as usual.

Four introductory talks to identify issues for discussion.

  • Group 1: Appropriate technologies and how they can be used for dissemination
  • Group 2: Education and awareness
  • Group 3: Relationship building between NMHSs and communities/decision-makers

Bring together the ideas from the different groups, discuss the main issues and agree on what would be a useful outcome from the discussions.
1300 Leave Met Office for visit
