About the Commonwealth Peoples'
Forum
The Commonwealth People's Forum is the major civil society
event organised at the time of the biennial Commonwealth Heads
of Government Meetings. The meetings, exhibitions and cultural
performances, which fall under the banner of the Commonwealth
People's Forum, aim to provide opportunities for networking
and interaction among civil society organisations. The Forum
also showcases the work and contribution of these organisations
to the fundamental principles and values of the Commonwealth,
particularly those of sustainable development, poverty eradication,
democracy and good governance. Previous events have been held
in Edinburgh, UK (1997), Durban, South Africa (1999), Brisbane,
Australia (2001), and Abuja, Nigeria (2003).
In 2005 the Commonwealth People's Forum will be held at the
Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta, Malta from 21
to 25 November. The theme for the 2005 Commonwealth People's
Forum in Malta is Networking Commonwealth People.
Organisers
Commonwealth Foundation
The Commonwealth Foundation is an intergovernmental organisation,
based in London resourced by and reporting to Commonwealth
governments. It works to enhance the role of civil society
organisations in governance, democracy, sustainable development
and culture by strengthening their institutional and human
capacity and creating opportunity and space for partnership,
participation, advice and leadership, thereby
achieving lasting improvements in the lives of Commonwealth
people.
Action for a Global Climate Community
Action for a Global Climate Community is calling for a new
political initiative within the United Nations Framework Convention
of Climate Change that will unite a group pf countries, north
and south, to lead the world in a commitment to reduce their
carbon emissions further and faster than existing Kyoto obligations.
We hope the Climate Community will accept the principle of
Contraction and Convergence - the contraction of greenhouse
gases to the safe, internationally recognised, scientifically
agreed level and
convergence, within an agreed timescale, to equal entitlement
to emissions for all.
Conference of Commonwealth Meteorologists
The Conference of Commonwealth Meteorologists (CCM) was established
in 1929 as a meeting of the Heads of Commonwealth National
Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs). The aim
of the CCM is to enhance the benefits of meteorology to society
through increased cooperation between NMHSs, governments and
other organisations including the private sector. Through
their expertise in various fields related to weather, water
and climate and their capabilities - including 24/7 operations
- CCM members play a significant role in the safety of life
and properties and in providing expert information on the
science of climate change and its impacts.
