The present Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD)
started as a small colonial service for East Africa way
back in 1929 to provide meteorological and climatological
services to various social economic sectors. Currently
KMD operates a network of 35 synoptic stations and about
2000 rainfall stations. |
|
Mission
To provide quality, efficient and timely meteorological
services for the safety of life, protection of property
and conservation of the natural environment through
improved data observation, monitoring, analysis, forecasting
and early warning.
|
We provide a range of services to government, civil societies,
civil aviation, shipping and other industry sectors. In collaboration
with other meteorological services we supply information on
the weather, water, climate and related environmental issues.
Some of the Regional Centres hosted
by Kenya Meteorological Department
- Regional Meteorological Training Centre (RMTC) also
referred to as the Institute for Meteorological Training
and Research (IMTR), Nairobi
Established in 1971 the institute has a University component
at Nairobi University campus and a centre component at Amoretti
Corner. Its mandate is to offer training for English-speaking
countries in Africa in all fields of meteorology and hydrology
and carry out research.
- IGAD Climate Prediction and Application Centre (ICPAC)
ICPAC's main aim is to build sub-regional and national
capacities for providing climate information, prediction
products and services, early warning, and related applications
for sustainable development. The centre also undertakes
capacity building activities for both the climate scientists
and the users of meteorological and climate information.
Currently ICPAC is responsible for Seven (7) IGAD Member
countries Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Sudan, Somalia, Kenya
and Uganda, together with Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.
- WMO Sub regional Office for Eastern and Southern Africa
The office focuses on technical co-operation activities,
particularly those related to the identification of requirements,
formulation of project proposals, evaluation and follow-up
of projects. It also mobilises resources at national and
regional levels through closer contacts with bilateral and
multilateral agencies and financial institutions, as well
as regional intergovernmental organisations. The office
further serves to increase the visibility of WMO in the
Regions, and ensure a fuller participation of the Member
countries in WMO Programmes, so that they benefit from them
in an equitable manner.
- Preparation for the Use of Meteosat Second Generation
in Africa (PUMA Project)
Launched early 2002 to improve standards of living and
environmental management. The project's purpose is to ensure
that up to 53 National Meteorological Services (NMS) and
four Regional Centres (RCs) in Africa sustain the delivery
of products, services and information useful for development,
environmental security and poverty elimination on the continent,
through the satellite transition process.
