The mission of the Department of Meteorological Service
in Malawi is "to provide reliable, responsive and
high quality weather and climate services to meet national,
regional and international obligations through timely
dissemination of accurate and up to-date data and information
for socio-economic development." |
The functions of the department are carried out in support
of three main areas of focus.
- Safety of life and property through natural disaster early
warnings.
- Safety and regularity of air transport through weather
reports at airports.
- Production of food and fibre through agro-meteorological
advisories.
The department, which is under the Ministry of Transport
and Public Works, is fully funded by government. Hydrology
is under the responsibility of the Ministry of Water Development,
while seismology is handled by the Department of Geological
Surveys.
The Department has 21 Principal Meteorological stations located
at Chitipa, Karonga, Bolero, Mzuzu, NkhataBay, Mzimba, Nkhotakota,
Kasungu, Mkanda, Lilongwe, Chitedze, Salima, Dedza, Ntaja,
Makoka, Chichiri, Bvumbwe, Thyolo, Chileka, Mimosa, and Ngabu.
It has a staff complement of 232 personnel including support
staff.
