New Zealand
New Zealand flag MetService was set up in 1861 as a storm warning service, following a spate of shipwrecks. We now gather, analyse and provide weather information for the public of New Zealand, and for a wide range of domestic and foreign commercial customers.

MetService is a State-Owned Enterprise, based in Wellington, and provides weather forecasting services to three main groups:

  • The Minister of Transport (for the people of New Zealand).
  • Civil and Military Aviation.
  • Media and Industry.

The meteorological services we provide, such as forecasts and official weather warnings on behalf of the Ministry of Transport and those certified by the Civil Aviation Authority, are separate from our commercial arm Metra.

Metra is the vehicle for MetService's international commercial activities, providing services to:

  • Media
  • Energy industry
  • Retail industry

Vision

This is how we would like to see ourselves described by a knowledgeable observer in a few years:

  • A recognised leader in weather and information presentation services
  • Profitable and well managed, with enthusiastic and highly skilled staff dedicated to the success of their company
  • Growing worldwide through customer appreciation of our valuable and innovative services

ISO certification

In November 1995 we achieved ISO certification - a world first for a national meteorogical service. We continue to work in accordance with this quality management programme.
