Prices and licences

The Met Office is the UK's national meteorological service. It produces meteorological information which is used for the safety of life and property. This information is also used for defence and civil aviation and to provide a wide range of products and services tailored to meet the needs of individual customers.

All information originating from the Met Office is subject to Crown Copyright. The Controller of Her Majesty's Stationery Office (HMSO) has authorised the Met Office to license the use and reuse of its own information, subject to certain conditions. The Met Office issues such licences under terms and conditions which may include the payment of a fee.

Pricing policy and product catalogue

The Met Office's pricing policy defines the overall framework from which the detailed prices are set. Information on individual products and services is available from the services page.

Data policy

The Met Office data policy sets out how the office trades in data, including information and software.

Licensing

The Met Office supports HMSO's Information Fair Trader Scheme (IFTS) and a statement on this has been signed by the Chief Executive. Licensing is carried out in accordance with the Delegation of Authority from HMSO, Competition Act 1998, European Union Law, and World Meteorological Organization Resolution 40. All the Met Office licences are non-exclusive and conform to The Re-use of Public Sector Information Regulations 2005.

The Standard and Bespoke licences are for products and services available from the product catalogue. A chargeable licence fee will apply.

Standard licence
Valid for standard uses of products and services, such as where data is used within one company and is not distributed to third parties. A chargeable licence fee may apply. To discuss access to information under this licence contact the Customer Centre.

Bespoke licence
Valid for any other uses, such as broadcasting, software licensing, royalty/revenue share arrangement. A chargeable licence fee may apply. To discuss access to information under these licences contact the Customer Centre.


The Reproduction, Data and Media licences are for the reuse of existing material that is not included in the product catalogue. The Met Office aims to allow reuse of our material for no cost or as little cost as possible. The possibility of a licence fee being charged is assessed once the licence application has been received.

Concessions

Exceptional concessions may be granted to organisations or individuals involved in public interest research (i.e. not for commercial gain), or for academic or educational purposes. Where a concession is granted to an organisation or individual, the same concession will be granted to like organisations or individuals in like circumstances.
