| To find | Try this | Examples |
| Via the ‘Hierarchy’ | Images are grouped
under broader and narrower subject categories, such as
clouds, weather phenomena, optical phenomena, instruments. Click on ‘Image Collection’ at the top of the catalogue page, then click on ‘Browse the Image Collection’. Click on the folder icon for the term you are interested in — this takes you to a list to view either sub-categories or images — repeat as required. |
For example, images
of cirrus clouds are under ‘Clouds’, then ‘High clouds’ and then under the various cloud types or species, e.g. ‘CH3 — cirrus spissatus’ |
| Via a catalogue search | Images can also
be found by searching
for them in the catalogue exactly as for books or
articles. It is also possible to limit searching just
to images: Click on the drop-down list next to ‘Material format’ towards the bottom left of the Power search screen. Choose: Images Enter search terms required and click on search |
e.g. where you
want images by a particular photographer, from a particular
event or location e.g. 16 October 1987 |
However you choose to search, thumbnail images appear in the catalogue and you can click on a link to open a larger picture.
When enquiring about images, please quote the Record number from the catalogue record or the image number in the descriptive information (click ‘i’ next to the thumbnail of the image). Unfortunately, we cannot use the filename which appears in the pop-up window to locate your image. Any other descriptive information would be appreciated.
