Autumnal gales forecast for the UK

2 November 2005

Autumn looks set to deliver a spell of very strong winds and heavy rain for many parts of the UK, as a fast-moving Atlantic depression tracks across the country through Thursday and Friday.

Southern areas of England and Wales will see the effects of the weather first as winds gust to 60-70 m.p.h. and bands of heavy rain move in through Wednesday night and Thursday possibly causing minor damage and localised flooding.

It's the turn of northern areas on Thursday night as the storm system heads towards Scandinavia, with very strong winds again reaching 60-70 m.p.h. in places and more heavy rain forecast.

The Met Office operates the National Severe Weather Warning Service for the UK and issues early warnings and flash messages to the public and local authorities as agreed thresholds are met.

This event doesn't reach the trigger points for the issue of an Early Warning as widespread disruption is not expected, but the impact of the weather can sometimes be exacerbated by other things such as excessively wet ground and trees in leaf and this could well be the case with this event. The Met Office is working with its customers in helping them deal with the effects of the predicted weather.
