Major storm to hit north-west Scotland

7 November 2005

Exceptionally strong winds, with gusts of 70-90 m.p.h., are forecast to affect parts of Scotland north-west of the Great Glen this evening and overnight. Coastal areas and high ground will be the worst affected, where gusts could reach 100 m.p.h. in places.

Autumn is a season of gales, but even for northern and western Scotland, a place quite used to strong winds at this time of year, the deep Atlantic depression running close to the area tonight will be a significant affair.

The Met Office has issued a Flash Warning as part of the National Severe Weather Warning Service to alert the public and authorities of the danger to life and property.
