28 April 2006 The Met Office is playing a key role to help the all-female British expedition team - the 'Arctic Foxes' - cross the Greenland ice cap next month.
Every 24 hours, weather updates, advising the adventurers on conditions for the day ahead and outlook period, will be provided by the Met Office. The forecast will highlight 'windows of opportunity' for the team by predicting the elements influencing their trek and departure, such as the strength and direction of the wind and the visibility.
As part of the daily weather briefing, the 'Arctic Foxes' will supply observational data for the Met Office. This information will be used to help verify the organisations weather forecasting models over Greenland.
Kate Abel, from the expedition's support crew, said: "We came to the Met Office because we knew they have the expertise to give us the very best forecast data. This will make a huge difference to the team's effort, as they attempt to cross the ice cap in record breaking time." Updates on the progress of the expedition
