19 June 2006 Following an exceptionally wet second half of May, the start of summer has been remarkably dry and warm. Early figures from the Met Office show that in the first two weeks of June (up to 14 June) the UK had only 7.7 mm of rain, 11% of the monthly rainfall. In Central Southern and South East England, which is experiencing severe water shortages, there has been 8.1 mm, only 15% of the long-term average. Meanwhile Wales, which last month had double its normal monthly May rainfall, has had less than 10% of the expected rainfall. Across the UK average maximum temperatures have been high at times, more than 3 °C above normal. The hottest place so far this summer is London, which recorded 32.4 °C on 12 June.
