21 September 2006 The Met Office is saying that a short period of severe gales is forecast for this evening and tonight. South-west England, particularly Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly and the western fringes of Wales are most at risk, along with Northern Ireland and the western fringes of Scotland. Gusts of 70-80 m.p.h. are possible with a small chance of exceptionally severe gales in the far south-west of England with gusts in excess of 80 m.p.h.. In stark contrast, much of England and Wales and parts of south-east Scotland will be unaffected by the strong winds. Temperatures will be well above average for September, reaching 28 °C in favoured places this afternoon. Notes to editors: A deep area of low pressure, which evolved from what was earlier in the week hurricane Gordon, is expected to move northwards from the south-west approaches during this afternoon, crossing Ireland tonight (Thursday 21 September).
