News release

Severe weather set to hit UK

30 December 2006

The Met Office continues to forecast spells of very stormy weather across much of the country as we head into the New Year, with gusts of 80 mph expected in the worst-affected areas.

On Saturday, parts of England and Wales could see winds of 60 to 70 mph, perhaps even 80 mph later in the evening in eastern and south-eastern England.

More very strong winds are forecast for New Years Eve, particularly over Northern Ireland and northern England, but also southern Scotland, and north Wales. Once again gusts up to 80 mph are likely in these areas. The advice is to keep up-to-date with the weather forecast and travel information.

As well as strong winds there will also be periods of heavy rain and squally showers. People concerned about the risk of flooding can call the Floodline 0845 988 1188 for the latest information.
