Christmas weather

The cold and frosty weather that many parts of the country have been experiencing looks likely to give way to milder conditions as we head towards the festive period.

Forecasters are expecting the weather to turn more unsettled over the weekend with temperatures returning to around normal. Bands of rain are likely to push south-east across the UK, bringing places in the south and east a damp and grey rather than white Christmas Day. Brighter skies and some showers will follow from the north.

The Met Office will be monitoring a number of cities across the country to officially declare whether or not it snowed on Christmas Day in each location. You will be able to check this on the Met Office website by noon on Boxing Day.

Met Office forecaster Frank Saunders said: "With a few days to go, the weather has been seasonal with fog and frost. However, as we head towards the big day cloud and rain will move in from the west and it is unlikely that many of us in the UK will see a white Christmas".
