Brighter outlook for Met Office website

19 November 2008

Newer

Today sees the launch of the new look Met Office website, delivering a fresh and modern feel whilst introducing greater functionality and improved content.

Visitors to www.metoffice.gov.uk will notice changes to the homepage with easier to read text and clearer navigation to the latest weather and climate change information.

The refreshed website also sees the launch of the Met Office Climate Change Centre which aims to deliver all you need to know about climate change science and its impacts in one place. The Climate Change Centre is a one-stop shop, helping the general public, businesses and the government stay up to date with the latest climate science, impacts and news.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to customise their visit to the Met Office website. Users will be able to 'fix' the latest forecast and observation for their town or city on the homepage so it is there every time they visit.

Through the 'My Bookmarks' function, visitors will also be able to create a personal list of bookmarks which will allow them to quickly find the content they find most interesting.

Other improvements across the website include:

  • improved accessibility with the ability to change print size and contrast;
  • improved site navigation;
  • news feeds of weather warnings, news releases and job vacancies using RSS;
  • a wider range of content including audio and video.

Further changes will follow next year following feedback from visitors. This next phase will see changes to the weather content of the site, with a refreshed look at how weather information is presented on the website.
