Heavy snow brings disruption

Further heavy snow overnight Thursday and into Friday caused widespread disruption across a large area of the UK, from south-west England to the Midlands and the East.

Up to 21 cm of snow fell in parts of Devon last night with the heavy snow affecting major roads - resulting in 200 people being stranded on the A38 near Exeter.

Snowfall has also affected major routes through the Midlands, South Wales and the Home Counties.

During the rest of Friday, rain, sleet and snow will slip further south across parts of south-east England before clearing away through this evening and overnight.

Overnight temperatures are expected to fall well below freezing with widespread ice on untreated roads and pavements for much of Saturday.

The outlook remains wintry with further spells of rain, sleet and snow for parts of the UK, through the weekend and into next week.
