Dr Richard Betts PhD BSc(Hon) MSc
- Leads the Climate Impacts research team in the Met Office Hadley Centre.
- Is one of the Met Office’s main spokesmen on the science of climate change.
- Introduced the former US Vice President Al Gore at an international conference on climate change.
- Has a Bachelor's degree in Physics and a Master's in Meteorology and Climatology.
- Wrote his PhD thesis on the role of the world's ecosystems in climate change.
- Has worked as a climate modeller for 15 years.
- Has pioneered a number of key scientific developments on ecosystem-climate feedbacks and a integrated view of climate change impacts.
- Has published 40 peer-reviewed scientific papers.
- Is a lead author on the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
- Was an award-winning lead author on the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment – the authors shared the Zayed Environment Prize with Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations.
- Sits on the board of directors of James Lovelock’s GAIA charity.
- Is 37 and lives in east Devon with his wife and two children.
