Richard Betts

Dr Richard Betts PhD BSc(Hon) MSc

  • Leads the Climate Impacts research team in the Met Office Hadley Centre.
  • Is one of the Met Office’s main spokesmen on the science of climate change.
  • Introduced the former US Vice President Al Gore at an international conference on climate change.
  • Has a Bachelor's degree in Physics and a Master's in Meteorology and Climatology.
  • Wrote his PhD thesis on the role of the world's ecosystems in climate change.
  • Has worked as a climate modeller for 15 years.
  • Has pioneered a number of key scientific developments on ecosystem-climate feedbacks and a integrated view of climate change impacts.
  • Has published 40 peer-reviewed scientific papers.
  • Is a lead author on the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
  • Was an award-winning lead author on the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment – the authors shared the Zayed Environment Prize with Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations. 
  • Sits on the board of directors of James Lovelock’s GAIA charity. 
  • Is 37 and lives in east Devon with his wife and two children.
