A range of activities has been developed to help to test the knowledge and understanding of students.
 
Data activities
 

Relevancies : Maths, ICT, Geography, English

This activity involves students using UK and world data from the data pages along with climate averages, synoptic charts and satellite imagery. They are required to collect data from relevant webpages, compare weather and climate in different areas and write weather-based articles. Atlas and graphing skills are also tested.

Synoptic weather charts

This activity looks at analysing synoptic weather charts and identifying common synoptic features. Knowledge of common weather patterns associated with high and low pressure is also tested.

Isotherms

This activity looks at the variations in long-term average climate across the UK and the causes of these variations, e.g. topography, heat islands, proximity to the coast. Students' knowledge of contours on maps is also tested.

UK rainfall

This exercise looks at weather chart and satellite image interpretations skills. Also tested are the students' knowledge of air masses and the mechanisms for precipitation formation.

Air masses

This activity looks at the identification of weather chart features. Students are required to know air mass characteristics and be able to recognise air masses from a weather chart.

GCSE project ideas

This section contains a series of exercises designed for GCSE project work. Topics covered include monitoring the accuracy of forecasts, microclimate studies and typical weather conditions during the passage of a depression. All projects involve an element of data collection plus data logging and manipulation.
