Powered by the weather

Lightning striking pylon

The energy industry can be dramatically affected by the weather. Consumer demand for electricity or gas changes from hour to hour and day to day. Storms and severe weather can damage infrastructure. Longer-term climate change also has an impact on future development.

The energy industry is also significantly affected by political and environmental issues. The Kyoto Accord requires the diversification of energy production using cleaner, weather-driven sources, so as to reduce our UK emissions by about 60% in the next fifty years.

To meet these challenging corporate and environmental targets, companies have naturally demanded increasing sophistication in weather services.

The Met Office has been working closely with UK energy companies on EP2, an innovative project looking at the effects of climate change on the energy industry. This project is the first of its kind, being sponsored by an entire sector.
