With growth in the use of gas-fired power stations, there is a greater requirement for more efficient plants... High- and low-voltage networks are affected by the weather... Renewable sources are more than affected by the weather, they are the weather... The penalties for incorrect energy demand forecasts are significant to say the least... |
Powered by the weather
The energy industry can be dramatically affected by the weather. Consumer demand for electricity or gas changes from hour to hour and day to day. Storms and severe weather can damage infrastructure. Longer-term climate change also has an impact on future development. The energy industry is also significantly affected by political and environmental issues. The Kyoto Accord requires the diversification of energy production using cleaner, weather-driven sources, so as to reduce our UK emissions by about 60% in the next fifty years. To meet these challenging corporate and environmental targets, companies have naturally demanded increasing sophistication in weather services.
Climate change will have a major impact on the UK energy industry. Impact of Climate Change on the UK Energy Industry is a year long research project involving the majority of the UK energy industry, and facilitated by the Met Office. Energy Industry Customer ForumThe Met Office will host the Energy Forum on 7 October 2008 in Exeter. This event is aimed at our customers in the energy industry. The day will begin with an introduction from our Chief Executive, John Hirst, followed by presentations from energy industry guests on their experiences of our services and presentations from the Met Office. |
