Calculations in a street canyon

  • AEOLIUS calculates hourly concentrations of pollutants within a street canyon at kerbside level

  • A street canyon is a relatively narrow street between buildings that line up continuously along both sides

  • The concentrations calculated are for parallel or along street flow and for across street flow, particularly leeward concentrations where leeward is defined here as the side of the street from where the wind is blowing

  • Hourly concentrations in ppb are calculated for NOx, CO, SO2, C6H6 (benzene) and C4H6 (1,3 butadiene) and in microgm-3 for PM10

  • For NOx further calculations are made for an hourly concentration of NO2 and a 98 percentile value of NO2

  • For carbon monoxide a further calculation is made for a maximum 8 hour concentration

Running AEOLIUS from a floppy disk:

Make a working copy of the original disk, then type a: or c: depending on the drive used. Type either aeolius or AEOLIUS. After the introduction several prompts appear. Note: the program is set with a number of defaults - you will need to enter your values.

You must:

  • ENTER A STREET WIDTH (typically between 10.0 and 30.0 metres)

  • ENTER A STREET HEIGHT (typically between 10.0 and 30.0 metres)

  • ENTER A TRAFFIC SPEED (typically between 5.0 and 15.0 ms-1)

  • ENTER NO. OF VEHICLES (typically between 1000 and 4000)

  • AN HOUR - an initial default is given of 2000 veh hr-1

  • ENTER WIND SPEED (typically between 2 and 8 ms-1)

  • ENTER POLLUTANT - THIS MUST BE IN CAPITALS

  • Either enter NOx, CO, PM10, SO2, C6H6 or C4H6

  • ENTER BACKGROUND - this represents the ambient value that one would find in the town or city. Remember value is in ppb for all pollutants with the exception of PM10 that is in microgm-3 (an initial default is given of NOx)

  • ENTER YEAR - from 1996 through to 2005

To rerun program, after the prompt 'Do you wish to run again (Y/N)' ENTER Y otherwise ENTER N. If Y is entered the same prompts appear but the defaults are the previous values entered.
