Olympic Games - Triathlon

Athletes will swim, cycle and run as they compete in the triathlon.

The London 2012 triathlon takes place in Hyde Park in central London. There are three elements to an Olympic triathlon:

  • athletes start with a 1.5 km swim,
  • followed by a 40 km cycle,
  • finishing with a 10 km run.

The women's triathlon takes place on 4 August and then men's event takes place on 7 August, there are no heats to the triathlon with the first man and women crossing the finish line crowned Olympic champion.

Athletes will swim in the Serpentine in Hyde Park before completing a seven lap cycle taking in some of London's most iconic tourist attractions, including Buckingham Palace and Wellington Arch. Competitors will then finish the triathlon with a four lap running course around the Serpentine.

Triathlons and the weather

Athletes will be hoping the Great British weather is favourable for the triathlon events. Light winds and overcast conditions are preferable for triathlon events however a tail wind will assist athletes when running and cycling.

The current world champions in the men's and women's events are in the Great British Olympic team. Alistair Brownlee and Helen Jenkins won the ITU World Triathlon event in Beijing in September putting them among the favourites to win Gold at London 2012.
