As much as we might all hate to admit it, the days of summer are numbered. That means it's time to push those summer outfits to the back of the wardrobe and cosy up with some new pieces for autumn. Let's take a look at the new styles that will help men and women heat up their wardrobe for the upcoming season.
Calling all fans of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love-'90s grunge is about to be resurrected for the autumn/winter season. For the ladies, the trick is to pair your darker floral-patterned dresses with leather jackets and leggings to give your look a bit of rock 'n roll edge, or invest in a plaid shirt and a pair of denim overalls to create a classic grunge ensemble. Warm up your look for the autumn chill with a chunky-heeled boot and a beanie.
The grunge look is sure to be a big hit with men, as it channels that "just rolled out of bed" look. The key to pulling off the grunge look without looking like a total slob is to pair structured pieces with unstructured ones-i.e. an oversized jacket with tailored trousers, or baggy trousers with a fitted tee. While plaid will surely be the go-to pattern for both guys and girls looking this season, it's not the only grunge-worthy print: Tartan pleats, camouflage, and animal prints all add a bit of edge to this season's ensembles.
For the ladies, emerald is the must-have shade for the upcoming season. Pair a classic button-down white blouse with a belted emerald green skater skirt and knee socks to put a twist on the classic schoolgirl look. For something more comfy and casual, try pairing an emerald green longline boyfriend tee with an oversized cardigan, printed leggings, and trainers. Need something sophisticated for the office? Pair a sleeveless emerald green dress with a grey blazer and a pair of pumps. Remember that this gorgeous green shade is complemented by other jewel tones-garnet, amethyst, and sapphire-when you're putting together your new look.
For men, the "it" colour this autumn is burgundy. For a subtle statement, complement your traditional grey suit with a burgundy scarf, tie, or leather dress shoes. Burgundy jumpers and cardigans can be dressed up or down to suit the occasion. Pair them with chinos and boots for formal settings, or a graphic tee, jeans, and plimsoles for something more casual. Guys who really want to make a statement will wear burgundy trousers and/or pair the hue with another trending autumn shade: turquoise.
Ladies-the motto is the bolder the better this season when it comes to picking out your staple autumn coat or jacket-floral prints, leather, and varsity-style letter jackets are all on-trend. Don't be afraid to try on coats that are slightly oversized or boxy-masculine-inspired silhouettes are in this season.
If you're more of a footwear fanatic, slip into a pair of thigh-high leather boots this autumn. These over-the-knee boots are cleverly designed to provide you with some added warmth in the chilly winter months while still allowing you to look stylish and chic. Pair them with your favourite jumper/skinny jeans combo, or wear them with shorter skirts and dresses for an irresistible autumn look.
For the guys, bundling up this season means investing in a staple bomber jacket. While ladies outerwear is all about making a daring statement this season, men's outerwear takes a more subtle approach. We're seeing dark, traditional hues trending this autumn-navy, grey, black, and Kelley green-though it's worth noting the inclusion of camouflage and denim in men's outerwear this season. Of course, traditional hues can always be paired with a brightly-coloured trouser and a beanie to liven up the ensemble for high street.
Can't decide whether it's sweater or jacket weather this autumn? No problem. Wear a gilet instead. Solid hues like navy and red look great over your graphic tees and dress shirts, while a check gilet makes a statement of its own. Cosy up even more by adding a beret and gloves to your autumn ensemble.
