In this section we look at how our understanding of the weather has evolved through time, and how weather has played a key role in shaping Britain.
Weather has been a source of fascination for hundreds of years, and will no doubt continue as a favourite conversational topic for hundreds more as weather continues to affect us.
Delving into the Library and archive we have found lots of interesting records of weather, dating as far back as c1200. From messages in a bottle to a Royal Proclamation, the archive gives a glimpse of how weather patterns and ocean currents were first understood, how weather terms were created and how the skill of creating weather charts and forecasting evolved.
