Description   Special equipment/advice
  • Arctic or extremely wintry conditions.
  • Slopes covered in hard frozen snow and ice.
  • Major paths could be obscured.
  • Steep sections of paths could be extremely treacherous and the possibility of a slip or fall is extremely high.
  • Cornices (overhanging snow) can form on cliff edges.
  
  • Ice axe, crampons and full mountaineering equipment is essential.
  • Paths become very dangerous without such specialist equipment, especially when descending.
  • In poor visibility or whiteout conditions navigation skills and techniques will be required.
