Forecast summary

Regional forecast for North East England

Dry and sunny after inland frost and freezing fog patches.

Today:

Dry everywhere with long sunny periods, after early inland patchy fog slowly clears. Inland areas will also have an early frost and will remain cold, despite the sunshine, compared to milder coastal areas where the highest daytime temperatures will occur. Maximum Temperature 9 °C.

Tonight:

A widespread frost will quickly develop under the largely clear skies. Overnight some places may remain clear, but there is an increasing chance of low cloud or fog developing. Minimum Temperature -4 °C.

Tuesday:

Some places, most likely Northumberland, may have sunny spells, but generally it will be dry but dull, with a mixture of mist, low cloud and fog or hill fog. Maximum Temperature 8 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Generally cloudy with a chance of rain at times, especially across the Pennines. It will also be windy Wednesday, slightly less so Thursday and Friday, and becoming noticeably milder.

UK forecast for the next 5 days

Cloudy and misty in the south. Brighter in the north.

Today:

A cloudy day, with mist and fog in much of southern England and Wales. Brighter in the north and parts of the east, but cold again, aside from the far south-west.

Tonight:

Clear and frosty in the north, elsewhere mostly cloudy with mist and fog. Winds will be light and it'll be much milder than recent nights.

Tuesday:

Dry and cloudy with hill fog for most of the UK. Strong winds and rain affecting the north and west of Scotland later. Mild in the south and west.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Becoming more unsettled. An increasing south-westerly wind will bring milder weather and less widespread frosts, but also cloud and occasional spells of rain.

Outlook for the UK over the next 6-30 days

UK Outlook for Saturday 10 Dec 2016 to Monday 19 Dec 2016:

It is likely to be cloudy with spells of rain across southern and south-eastern parts of the UK on Saturday. The rest of the UK should be brighter with blustery showers. During the rest of the weekend and into the following week, further periods of wet and windy weather are expected to move across the UK. The most unsettled conditions are likely across the north and west with drier and brighter weather for southern and eastern areas. By mid December there should be some longer, drier spells between the wet weather, with a gradual change to something a little more settled. It will also be fairly mild initially but temperatures are likely to return closer to normal, with an increasing risk of overnight frost.

Updated at: 1226 on Mon 5 Dec 2016

UK Outlook for Tuesday 20 Dec 2016 to Tuesday 3 Jan 2017:

Whilst there is a good deal of uncertainty, it is most likely that high pressure is going to become more dominant through the end of December, and so the weather should be more settled across the UK. If the pressure does build, then we can expect drier than average conditions for most areas with lighter winds. Temperatures are also then likely to be below average with an increased risk of frost and fog, especially where skies remain clear overnight. As we head into the New Year there is the potential for the weather to become more unsettled again.
