Regional forecast for Orkney & Shetland

Rain turning to clear spells and showers overnight. Severe gales.

This Evening and Tonight:

Persistent rain giving way to drier, clearer conditions and scattered showers across both Orkney and Shetland, turning more frequent later with a risk of hail. Becoming very windy with westerly gales increasing to severe gale force later tonight. Minimum Temperature 3 °C.

Wednesday:

A rather cloudy, showery and very windy morning with northwesterly gales, occasionally severe at first. Showers becoming fewer during the afternoon with drier, brighter weather and winds gradually easing down. Maximum Temperature 7 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Lighter winds on Thursday and Friday and cold with a few wintry showers. Heavy rain preceded by sleet on Saturday morning along with southeasterly gales. Drier, clearer, less windy later.

This Evening and Tonight:

It will be windy through this evening and overnight, with gales across Scotland. However, clear spells will start to develop across the north with a patchy frost forming. Elsewhere, it'll be cloudy and mild, with heavy rain for some.

Wednesday:

Wednesday will be windy for many, with sunny spells in the north, along with some showers. Further south it'll be cloudy and mild, with outbreaks of rain and drizzle.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Storm Doris will sweep in from the west on Thursday, bringing widespread gales, with hill snow in the north. Friday will be drier, but wet and breezy again on Saturday.

Outlook for the UK over the next 6-30 days

UK Outlook for Sunday 26 Feb 2017 to Tuesday 7 Mar 2017:

Late February and early March look generally mild, changeable and unsettled at times, with Atlantic depressions pushing across the UK. This means there will be spells of rain, some of which could be heavy across high ground in the north and west, and accompanied by windy conditions, perhaps with gales at times, again more likely in the north and west. Showers in between these Atlantic systems could be wintry over northern hills. Some wind and rain is likely for the south and east too, though with more prolonged spells of drier and brighter weather in-between. Throughout this period there remains a lower chance that high pressure centred to the southwest of the UK may become more dominant and this would mean rather more settled conditions establishing themselves, with overnight frosts.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 8 Mar 2017 to Wednesday 22 Mar 2017:

For March there is a fair amount of uncertainty, but the weather is most likely to be unsettled at first. There will be spells of wet and windy weather, interspersed with brighter and showery conditions with some snow possible across the north of the UK. There will, however, also be some drier and brighter spells, particularly in the south and east where we may see some local frost and fog at times overnight. Temperatures are expected to be around average for the time of year but there remains a small chance of seeing a more prolonged cold spell, if settled conditions develop more widely. This is most probable later in the period.
