Snow warning of yellow

Yellow warning of snow

Be aware

Valid from 09:00 on Friday until 23:50 on Friday

A band of sleet or snow showers will affect parts of northern Scotland during Friday before moving slowly southwards. Snow will be initially confined to high ground but will start falling to lower levels away from coasts. There will be large variations in accumulations due to the showery nature of the snow with some places expected to see little or no snow. However, there is the risk of several cm of snow in places, so please be aware of the potential for disruption to travel.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

A frontal zone in cold air will move slowly and erratically southwards across the area, generating rain near coasts but sleet and snow inland, with 2-6 cm of snow down to low levels locally and up to 10 cm on hills. Given its uncertain progress, there are doubts about timing and areas affected, and this warning is likely to be updated.

The public is advised to take extra care, further information and advice can be found here: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings/
