Rain warning of yellow

Yellow warning of rain

Be aware

10:00 on Saturday until 20:00 on Saturday

Although some places will remain dry during Saturday, scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms, already across parts of the southeast of England, are likely to develop more widely through the afternoon and continue into the evening, with some localised intense downpours likely. This update expands the warning area and brings the start time forward by an hour. Additionally, a greater probability of larger rainfall totals, means that isolated medium impacts are now judged more likely. Please be aware of the potential for surface water flooding, whilst hail and lightning will be additional hazards for travel and outdoor activities.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

Heavy showers are expected to develop more widely around midday on Saturday, with thunderstorms likely in places during the afternoon and evening, when they will tend to become organised into bands. But as often is the case in these situations, some places will miss the heaviest rainfall, or even remain completely dry. Hail is likely in some of the storms, which could produce 20-30 mm of rain within an hour in a few places.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

The heaviest thunderstorms could produce hail, with perhaps 20 to 25 mm of rain within an hour in a few places. As often in these situations, some places will miss the showers.
