Rain warning of yellow

Yellow warning of rain

Be aware

Valid from 12:00 on Tuesday until 20:00 on Tuesday

Scattered heavy showers are expected to develop across northern parts of Scotland during Tuesday afternoon. Some of these will become heavy and thundery, especially across the northeast and perhaps across Easter Ross and Inverness. The showers will be slow-moving and as a result there is the potential for large rainfall accumulations here in a short period of time. Whilst many places could miss the showers the public should be aware of the risk of localised flooding and difficult driving conditions in any surface water. This is an update to the warning issued yesterday.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

Warm, unstable air across the area will allow locally torrential showers to build. With 20 mm or so in a short period of time, flash flooding could occur, especially if it happens to fall in an urban area. Lightning and hail will be additional possible hazards. As is always the way with thundery showers, many places will stay dry, but where thunderstorms do form, large rainfall accumulations are possible, especially given their slow moving nature.

The public is advised to take extra care, further information and advice can be found here: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings/
