Rain warning of yellow

Yellow warning of rain

Be aware

Valid from 12:00 on Friday until 12:00 on Sunday

Rain will be persistent and heavy at times through much of Friday and Saturday and lasting into Sunday morning. The public should be aware of the risk of localised flooding and some travel disruption, especially on Saturday and on Sunday morning.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

A slow-moving Atlantic front will bring a prolonged spell of wet weather to much of west and northwest Scotland within a very mild, moist southwesterly flow. Two-day rainfall totals of 50-100 mm are expected widely, with perhaps 150-200 mm in the wettest spots in the West Highlands. As the very mild air is drawn in on the strong southwesterly airstream, snowmelt will add to the flooding risk. This is an update to the alert issued on Tuesday to expand the warning area and to extend the validity period into Sunday. There remains some doubt about the extent and timing of the heaviest rain so this alert will be further refined nearer the time.
