Yellow warning of snow and ice

Be aware

Valid from 18:00 on Monday until 10:00 on Tuesday

Further heavy, wintry showers are expected overnight Monday and into Tuesday. Snow will fall to low levels in places in Scotland and Northern Ireland, with localised accumulations of 1 to 3 cm, while snow-cover will be more widespread over hills here, with around 4-8 cm possible above around 200m, especially in the west. Wales and northern areas of England will see snow chiefly over higher ground, with more than 5 cm in places but with some accumulations possible at low levels too. Ice will be an additional hazard across much of northern Britain. The public are advised to be aware of tricky travel conditions generally, and possible disruption to transport.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

The cold westerly flow which became established across the UK Sunday night is set to continue overnight Monday and into Tuesday. This is a very unstable airmass bringing showers of sleet, snow and hail. Again, once we lose the effects of daytime sunshine, snow will start to accumulate more widely, and along with ice may present some problems, in particular for road travel on Tuesday morning. This again seems most likely for parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and cross Pennine routes. Problems should reduce steadily further into Tuesday morning, as the March sunshine gets to work on melting the snow, although taking until mid to late morning across upland parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The public is advised to take extra care, further information and advice can be found here: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings/
