Ice warning of yellow

Yellow warning of ice

Be aware

Valid from 18:00 on Thursday until 10:00 on Friday

Showers will turn increasingly to sleet and snow during today, Thursday, especially over higher ground, these continuing overnight and into Friday morning. As temperatures fall this evening, there will be an increasing risk of icy stretches on untreated surfaces, these lasting into Friday morning. The public should be aware of the risk of some difficult driving conditions and the potential for some minor travel disruption.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

A cold, showery, airmass will spread southeastwards on Thursday to reach all parts of the United Kingdom by evening. Over Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England the showers will be wintry with sleet and snow expected over higher ground. By day, with sunshine between showers, lying snow should be confined to high level routes above 300-400 m and will tend to melt between showers. However the snow showers will settle more readily in the evening and overnight, with temporary accumulations to lower levels. 2-5 cm is likely on routes above 200 m, with 10 cm possible on ground above 400 m in the West Highlands of Scotland. During the evening and overnight a frost is expected leading to icy patches on untreated surfaces.

The public is advised to take extra care, further information and advice can be found here: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings/
