Service details

Available for 4,300 major towns and cities worldwide. This service gives a forecast for up to five days detailing maximum temperature, minimum temperature and weather type.

  • It is the number of cities information that you are licenced to display which is important not the actual locations

The 4,300 world cities five-day forecast is one of our most popular datafeed services. It gives the viewer details on temperature and weather type. At a quick glance, you can see what weather to expect for the next five days for your chosen major city or town. The service provides an even spread of cities per continent with more in Europe.

The information is sent via an FTP pushed datafeed from the Met Office server to the clients, with the 4,300 world cities five-day forecast being sent in Comma Separated Variable format (CSV). For further information and details on the format of this datafeed please see the sample file and further explanation in the following example:

Format

The forecast data for the cities, ports and airports will appear arrive as a CSV file. The following is an example of an extract from such a file:

The format of this data is as follows:

  • Item 1: Site ID. This is a 4-digit integer.
  • Item 2: Site name. This is a string of up to 50 characters.
  • Item 3: Site Country or Region. This is a string of up to 25 characters.
  • Item 4: Site Continent. This is a string of up to 11 characters
  • Item 5: Site Type. This is a string of up to 7 characters and will be one of 'City', 'Port' or 'Airport'.
  • Item 6: Start Hour. The morning edition will start at 0600 that day. The afternoon edition will start at 0600 the next day.
  • Item 7: Start Day Name. This will be a string of 3 characters and will be one of 'Sun', 'Mon', 'Tue', 'Wed', 'Thu', 'Fri' or 'Sat'.
  • Item 8: Start Day. The day of the month, eg 7 or 27.
  • Item 9: Start Month. The month, eg 5 or 12.
  • Item 10: Start Year. The four-digit year, eg 2000.
  • Item 11: Reserved for Wind Direction
  • Item 12: Reserved for Wind Speed
  • Item 13: Max Day 1. This will be the maximum daytime temperature for day 1. This covers the period from 0600 on Start Date to 1800 on Start Date.
  • Item 14: Min Day 1. This will be the minimum nighttime temperature for day 1. This covers the period from 1800 on Start Date to 0600 on Start Date +1.
  • Item 15: Sig Wx Day 1. This will be the Significant Weather code for daytime on day 1.
  • Item 16: Reserved for visibility
  • Item 17: Reserved for pressure
  • Item 18: Reserved for pressure tendency
  • Item 19: Reserved for relative humidity
  • Items 20 to 55 give the reserved positions and the max. and min. temperatures and the significant weather codes for days 2 to 5.
  • Temperatures are in degrees Celsius
  • Maximums relate to the daytime maximum
  • Minimums relate to the night-time minimum
  • The night-time values relate to the night preceding the day: in the example, 6 is the minimum for the night Sunday 06 Jun - Monday 07 June
  • The weather code covers the local daytime period.
