PRECIS Workshop May 13th-17th 2013 Reading, UK
The UK Met Office is organising its annual PRECIS (Providing REgional Climates for Impacts Studies, http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/precis) workshop at Reading University (Reading, England), from 13th-17th May 2013.
The workshop gives participants the necessary scientific and technical knowledge to run PRECIS and to make best use of its output. PRECIS has been developed at the Met Office Hadley Centre with support from the UK Government Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and Department for International Development (DFID) as well as from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
As PRECIS is a product which was designed with scientists and researchers in developing countries in mind, participants wishing to attend the workshop from an Annex II country (List of Annex II countries) will be charged 5000 Euros to help offset the costs of ongoing PRECIS support and development. This charge is not applicable to participants from institutions in non-Annex II countries. The workshop consists of a combination of hands-on laboratory work and lectures. It would be suitable for climate and environmental modellers, impacts and vulnerability assessment researchers and other researchers whose work requires the use of climate estimates.
The workshop is free of charge, but all participants are expected to cover their own travel and accommodation costs.
There are a limited number of spaces available at this workshop, and we cannot guarantee you a place. Applicants should send a short CV to firstname.lastname@example.org to demonstrate they have the scientific and technical skills to benefit from the workshop and a 1-2 paragraph concept note indicating their motivation for participation, research interest, institution and intended use of the knowledge acquired from the workshop.
PRECIS Discussion Board -- Down Indefinitely
The PRECIS Discussion Board is hosted on the climateprediction.net web forum, which was recently hacked and has been taken down indefinitely. As such the PRECIS Discussion Board is not currently accessible. For the time being, if you have any technical support issues with PRECIS, please email email@example.com. When a replacement tech support forum is created, we will notify all registered users.

News & Announcements
Update on PRECIS Versions
A new program has recently been developed at Reading University which converts PP format data to CF-compliant NetCDF format. It includes support for the rotated pole (the native grid of output data from PRECIS) within the NetCDF metadata. If you would like to use this software, you can download it from www.met.reading.ac.uk/~david/pp2cf.html.Please contact us if you have any issues installing pp2cf as we may be able to help.
- PRECIS 2.0
PRECIS 2.0 will be released in 2013. Version 2.0 will include the ability for PRECIS to be driven by a subset of CMIP5 GCM experiments (GCMs which will inform the upcoming IPCC fifth assessment report). The first CMIP5 model to be made available for use with PRECIS 2.0 will be HadGEM2-ES, the earth-system model from the Met Office Hadley Centre. Other CMIP5 models will be made available is due course, allowing users to select and downscale a sub-set of the ensemble. Version 2.0 will also feature a faster regional model executable and an improved user interface.
PRECIS-related Workshops and Training
- Climate Education (Online Training)
The PRECIS team in collaboration with the University of Oxford Continuing Education Department have created two online courses. The first of these courses "An Introduction to the Science of Climate and Climate Change" is designed for educated scientists. Course 1 is can be taken free of charge. The second course, entitled "Constructing and Applying High Resolution Climate Scenarios" is a paid-for successor to course 1 for those wishing to understand the scientific issues surrounding regional climate modelling in greater depth. - PRECIS and GLAM Workshop, Thailand, February 2013
The PRECIS team carried out a joint PRECIS and GLAM crop model workshop (with Dr. Sanai Li from South Korea) hosted by Kasetsart University, Bangkok, Thailand. The workshop focused on postprocessing PRECIS regional model output data for driving the crop model GLAM, with the goal of understanding potential climate-change impacts on crops.
- Malaysian Meteorological Department PRECIS Workshop, Malaysia, November 2012
The PRECIS team ran a four day workshop hosted by the Malaysian Meteorological Department in Kuala Lumpur which focused on the analysis of regional model output data from PRECIS for research into climate change impacts over South East Asia and Malaysia in particular.
- Run and Analyse PRECIS from within Windows using VirtualBox
Recently the PRECIS team have developed a Linux virtual machine which contains a full installation of PRECIS as well as a host of analysis and visualisation software pre-installed. This virtual machine image can be provided to existing PRECIS users who want to analyse the data (or, if necessary, run PRECIS experiments) within a Windows or Mac OSX environment. The removes the need for a dedicated Linux PC running Linux or a dual-boot setup as well as the time needed to install PRECIS and analysis/visualisation packages in Linux. - QUMP ensemble sub-selection
If you are planning to work with the HadCM3Q 17-member GCM ensemble, please bear in mind that we do not release boundary data from all 17 GCMs. Instead, PRECIS users wishing to use HadCM3Q should undertake a scientifically based selection process towards choosing 4-6 members from the ensemble. This allows users to explore the range of uncertainty in projections while reducing the need to store, transfer and analyze large amounts of data. Please see http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/precis/qump for advice on how to make a selection and the procedure for requesting boundary data.
- Global Model Availability at BADC
You can now download a selection of daily and monthly mean output data from HadCM3Q(0-16) global model output data from the British Atmospheric Data Centre (BADC). This data is useful for selection of appropriate subsets of the 17 member HadCM3Q ensemble for experimental design as well as for validation of PRECIS experiments which have utilised HadCM3Q(0-16) as their driving GCM. A Quick Reminder: What is PRECIS?
PRECIS (Providing REgional Climates for Impacts Studies) is a regional climate modelling system allowing Met Office Hadley Centre regional climate models to be set up over any region and run on a PC (under the Linux operating system) with a simple user interface. It also includes a suite of data processing, analysis and display tools so experiments can easily be set up, run, analysed and data made available for wider application and dissemination. PRECIS is designed for researchers (with a focus on developing countries) to construct high-resolution climate change scenarios for their region of interest. These scenarios can be used in impact, vulnerability and adaptation studies, and to aid in the preparation of National Communications, as required under Articles 4.1 and 4.8 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
