News & Announcements

Update on PRECIS Versions

  • Faster executable for version 1.9 +

    We now have available a new executable for the HadRM3P regional model in PRECIS 1.9+ which may operate up to 25% faster. It is possible to stop a running PRECIS 1.9+ experiment cleanly, replace the current executable and then restart from the exact point at which the model cleanly stopped. If you would like to receive the new executable, please email precis.
  • HadRM3Q0: Occasional instabilities and removal from PRECIS system

    There are certain conditions in which the HadCM3Q0 model goes unstable. This was first noticed over the continental North America in a specific meteorological situation where a summer-time depression in the north-west was moving eastwards over the plains area in Southern Canada east of the Rockies. Locally high vertical velocities transported the very high surface humidities characteristic in this region in summer into the upper troposphere which induced oscillations in the version of the cloud scheme used in this formulation of the model. Subsequent investigations using the original PRECIS RCM HadRM3P showed that its use of an updated version of the cloud scheme did not lead to the oscillations and instability.

    Since this issue was detected and investigated, one or two PRECIS users have seen the same behaviour over different regions using HadRM3Q0. The only way to use the RCM in these circumstances is to restart the model at some time after the failure with the earliest available time being the start of the following month. This is clearly an unsatisfactory and impractical way of running regional climate simulations. As a result current and future versions of PRECIS will not include HadRM3Q0. However, if you have successfully run with this RCM and not suffered any failures then the results are still valid.

PRECIS-related Workshops and Training

  • Climate Education

    The PRECIS team have been working with the University of Oxford Continuing Education Department to create two short online courses. The first of these "An Introduction to the Science of Climate and Climate Change" is now available and can be taken free of charge. The second course is under construction and will look more specifically at regional climate modelling, and will be available later in the year. Visit  climateeduction.net for more information.

  • UK, 22nd-26th August 2011

    The PRECIS team are going to be running a PRECIS workshop at the University of Reading in August. If you are interested in attending please contact precis.

  • Singapore, 10th-12th May 2011

    The PRECIS team ran two workshops hosted by the Singapore Met Service, the first involving scientists from Met Services in 10 ASEAN countries and the second a half-day presentation and discussion session with Singapore public agencies. These workshop marks the beginning of a long-term collaboration between the Met Office Hadley Centre and the National Environment Agency, Singapore, and, through this, a deeper collaboration with Met Services in the region.

  • Saudi Arabia, 27th - 31st March 2011

    The PRECIS team recently ran a follow-up workshop in Jeddah, training scientists from GCC countries in the analysis and application of PRECIS outputs in impacts assessments. The workshop focussed on analysing extremes in observational and model data for validation and using ensemble simulations to understand uncertainty.

  • ICPAC WMO WCRP GCOS World Bank Workshop on Climate Change Modelling, Kenya, 21st - 25th February 2011

    This workshop was the second in a series being held at the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Center ( ICPAC) to assist the developing and least developed countries of the GHA region to undertake and appropriately use climate projections in climate risk management and adaptation planning. The new PP utilities tools in Windows were demonstrated here. Visit the  africa-adapt.net project page for more information.


  • Updated ERAIN sst/sice ancillary files

    A bug was discovered in the sea surface temperature and sea ice ancillary files used with regional model runs driven by the ERA-Interim reanalysis boundary data. This bug affected leap years only and may have an affect on extra-tropical regional model experiments. We suggest that if you intend to carry out any experiments with the ERA-Interim data that you contact precis for instructions on how to receive replacement sst/sice files.

  • PP Analysis Utilities for Windows

    We now have PP Utilities for Windows, enabling the full capability of the statistical and analysis software included with PRECIS within Windows XP/Vista/7 (32 or 64 bit versions). If you are interested in a copy please email us at precis.

  • Global Model Availability at BADC

    You can now download HadCM3Q(0-16) global model output data from the British Atmospheric Data Centre ( BADC), useful for selection of appropriate subsets of the 17 member HadCM3Q ensemble for experimental design as well as for validation purposes of completed experiments. Please click here for instructions and information on the BADC data.

  • Sharing of the PRECIS Output Data

    Are you willing to share your PRECIS output data? If yes, please email us at precis as we may be able to help facilitate sharing the PRECIS output data by providing web space and transfer media.

PRECIS Website Updates

  • New Website

    The PRECIS website has been moved and updated to www.metoffice.gov.uk/precis.

  • PRECIS Discussion Board

    We have switched over to providing PRECIS tech support via an internet forum. As this builds up over the years it will provide a searchable index for PRECIS users to check to find solutions - and thus to help each other!

    You will need to register on the PRECIS discussion board to submit a post. To join; please register by visiting  climateprediction.net/board and click on "Register" in the top right hand corner of the page. Once you have received your registration email and followed its instructions, email precis your name, institute and username. We need your username so we can add you to the list of users who can view and post on the forum! When you have been added, you can use this direct link  climateprediction.net/board/viewforum.php?f=59 to view the PRECIS board.

A Quick Reminder: What is PRECIS?

PRECIS (Providing REgional Climates for Impacts Studies) is a regional climate modelling system allowing Met Office Hadley Centre regional climate models to be set up over any region and run on a PC (under the  Linux operating system) with a simple user interface. It also includes a suite of data processing, analysis and display tools so experiments can easily be set up, run, analysed and data made available for wider application and dissemination. PRECIS is designed for researchers (with a focus on developing countries) to construct high-resolution climate change scenarios for their region of interest. These scenarios can be used in impact, vulnerability and adaptation studies, and to aid in the preparation of National Communications, as required under Articles 4.1 and 4.8 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
