PRECIS Workshops
PRECIS is made available at workshops run regularly by Met Office Hadley Centre staff, generally in the region where it is to be used. Workshops are provided to give scientific and technical training necessary to use PRECIS and address the many issues involved in its application. There are generally three international and one UK based PRECIS workshops held each year.
A PRECIS workshop usually includes an introduction to the PRECIS system and climate change, constructing climate scenarios for impact studies, uncertainties in climate modelling, designing a RCM experiment, the PRECIS data storage system and data processing and validation and evaluation of RCMs. The afternoons consist of hands-on sessions where the participants use the PRECIS interface to set up and run experiments and use PP utilities and other software to process and analyse the PRECIS output data. A demonstration of how to install PRECIS is given and the PRECIS software is given at the end of the workshop. After the workshop support and follow-up is provided through the PRECIS website and the email.
There have been 34 workshops training covering over 100 countries and over 300 participants. The workshops have been successful in encouraging collaboration between PRECIS users in groups of countries. For example, several countries in the Caribbean have collaborated to run different models and shared their output data. From this a web page was created by INSMET in Cuba, which allows for user specified plots to be generated on the fly.
