Edinburgh

Edinburgh, is the capital city of Scotland and is situated at the eastern end of the central belt, on the north sea coast, to the south of the Firth of Forth, the area where the River Forth flows into the North Sea.

The city centre is 2.5 miles south west of the shoreline of Leith and 26 miles inland, as the crow flies, from the eastern most point of the coast of Scotland.

Geologically; Edinburgh sits in a gap between the Firth of Forth to the north and the Pentland Hills to the south. The local landscape is a product of early volcanic activity extensive faulting and later periods of intensive glaciation. This has resulted in hills of tougher older basaltic rock (volcanic plugs) rising above much of the area. Castle Rock is one such prominence.

Evidence exists to show human habitation in the area from as long ago as around 8,500 BC. The earliest settlements grew up around Castle Rock and the city is said to be built on seven hills, giving an idea of the local topography.

Currently, the "Old Town" and "New Town" are both listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The city is also famous for the Edinburgh International Festival, which has grown since its start in 1947 into the biggest annual international arts festival in the world.

Edinburgh became the world's first UNESCO "City of Literature" in 2004 in recognition of both its literary heritage and its current literary activities.

Climate notes

Like most of Scotland, Edinburgh has a climate, which is relatively mild despite its northerly latitude.

Edinburgh is known as "the windy city", with the prevailing winds coming from the south west. Winds from an easterly direction are usually drier but considerably colder, and may be accompanied by a more local phenomenon called Haar, a persistent coastal fog.

Rainfall is distributed fairly evenly throughout the year.
