Outlook for the UK over the next 6-30 days

UK Outlook for Monday 4 Aug 2014 to Wednesday 13 Aug 2014:

Many areas probably starting off fine and generally dry on Monday. However, cloud and rain, possibly heavy at times, will gradually spread from the west through the latter part of Monday, through probably not reaching eastern regions until later on Tuesday. The unsettled theme is likely to continue until the end of the period, although there may be more in the way of drier and brighter conditions developing across the south and east later. Temperatures generally near normal, but often warm towards the south and east. Winds generally light to moderate for most, but perhaps locally strong in the northwest, with a risk of gales in some exposed western parts into the second half of next week.

UK Outlook for Thursday 14 Aug 2014 to Thursday 28 Aug 2014:

With no particularly strong signals regarding weather patterns over the UK during the latter part of August, conditions are more likely than not to be close to climatology. As such most regions can expect to see periods of fine weather with some sunshine interspersed by occasional spells of more changeable conditions with showers or rain. Northern parts are perhaps most likely to see the most frequent bouts of unsettled weather leaving southern parts with the most prolonged fine spells. Daytime temperatures are then likely to often be above average during fine spells.

Southampton information

Southampton has long been established as one of the UK’s foremost ports. Whilst today’s docks may be best known for departing cruise liners, the city has played a major part in maritime and history.

Southampton was the city that first saw the departure of the Mayflower in 1620 and, in 1912, Southampton was the starting point for the RMS Titanic on its maiden voyage.

Nestled between two rivers, the Test and Itchen, Southampton benefits from a double high tide which is created by both rivers, making the movement of large ships an easier feat. This feature is what has made Southampton a key port for some of the world’s most established cruise operators. This led to the beautiful Ocean Village being created in 1986 and since, then it has played host to The Global Challenge yacht race in 1992, 1996 and 2000 and is the home of The Southampton Yacht Club.

The Southampton boat show is also held annually in the city and is a key event in the maritime calendar.

But there is more to Southampton that just its port. For starters, the city has a proud sporting culture, with Southampton Football Club playing at the St Mary’s Stadium. The Rose Bowl, home to Hampshire Cricket Club, also hosts regular international cricket.

As it sits on the southern coast of the UK Southampton benefits from the oceanic climate, but due to its low lying location, has some of the warmest sunniest weather in the UK, and has held the record for the warmest June in the UK since 1976.

Southampton, which gained city status in 1964, has many claims to fame including the oldest bowling green in the world, which dates back to before 1299 and it is still in use. Every August a unique competition takes place there for the Knighthood of the Old Green, the winner being entitled to be called ‘Sir’ within the club.

The writer Jane Austen and members of her family lived in Southampton between 1806 and 1809 and a new Jane Austen Trail is linked to a series of plaques in the Old Town tracing her associations with Southampton
