Outlook for the UK over the next 6-30 days

UK Outlook for Sunday 31 May 2015 to Tuesday 9 Jun 2015:

Rather unsettled conditions at first with spells of rain interspersed by drier, brighter and more showery interludes. It may be rather windy, particularly in the northwest, with the bulk of the rainfall also here. Southern and eastern areas look best placed for the driest, brightest weather. Temperatures are likely to be below average across the country, but particularly in the northwest. By midweek, unsettled conditions are considered likely to continue in the northwest, with slightly below average temperatures, but more settled, warmer, conditions may start to build in the south. Towards the end of the week these warmer, more settled conditions look likely to spread north to most of the country although perhaps with a risk of showers in the south.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 10 Jun 2015 to Wednesday 24 Jun 2015:

There is some uncertainty in the likely weather type through this period, however there is a signal for higher pressure to become established to the north of the UK. This would lead to drier, warmer conditions for many, these perhaps most prolonged across the north, but it may also allow some more unsettled, perhaps thundery, weather to move up from continental Europe and affect the south of the country. This trend looks like it may continue into the third week of June with drier than average conditions in the north, however some unsettled spells are also likely to push in from the west at times, as well some thundery outbreaks also coming up from the south.

Southampton information

Southampton has long been established as one of the UK's foremost ports. Whilst today's docks may be best known for departing cruise liners, the city has played a major part in maritime history. Southampton was the city that first saw the departure of the Mayflower in 1620 and, in 1912, Southampton was the starting point for the RMS Titanic on its maiden voyage.

The Southampton boat show is also held annually in the city and is a key event in the maritime calendar.

The city has a proud sporting culture, with Southampton Football Club playing at the St Mary's Stadium. The Rose Bowl, home to Hampshire Cricket Club, also hosts regular international cricket.

Generally Southampton has mild winters. The average minimum temperature only falls as low as 2.6 °C in February; which is the coldest month of the year. This is mainly as a result of its close proximity to the sea. Likewise February also has the maximum number of air frost days, though notably lower than the UK average. The highest number of days with rainfall more than 1mm are in January - and winter has more than any other season. Despite this, rainfall accumulation is higher in autumn.

Temperatures can be mild from March onwards, with long term highs of 11 °C. By May, this figure rises to 17 °C. Costal locations can be affected by sea breezes, which result in lower maximum temperatures than further inland. Sunshine hours increases significantly in April from the previous month, and the figure is much higher than the UK average. Rainfall in Southampton is lower in spring than nationally, with May the driest month in the season.

July is the hottest month in Southampton and August is close behind. Average daytime maxima are 22.4 °C and 22.3 °C respectively. Extreme maximum temperatures can occur in either month and are usually associated with heat waves lasting several days. The highest temperature ever recorded in Southampton was 35.6 °C on 28th June. There are more sunshine hours in summer than any other season. Rainfall averages in Southampton during summer are half the national average and the driest month of the year is July, with an average of only 42 mm of rain.

Temperatures usually stay warm in September with an average daytime maximum of 19.8 °C. This is around 3 °C higher than the UK average. Rainfall accumulation in Southampton is highest in Autumn compared to any other season and typically the most rain falls in November. Days of air frost are around 1 day every two years in October, but the likelihood increases dramatically in November.

All climate data based on Southampton W.C, 1981 - 2010.
