Outlook for the UK over the next 6-30 days

UK Outlook for Saturday 27 Sep 2014 to Monday 6 Oct 2014:

Fairly cloudy at first, though some sunny intervals developing for central, southern and eastern parts of the UK. Outbreaks of rain are expected for northern and western areas, more persistent for parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland, although clearer, showery weather should follow for a time. It will be quite windy here too. Temperatures generally near or a little above normal. Into the following week, the north and west are likely to remain the windiest and most unsettled parts of the UK, with the best of the weather further south and east. However, a little rain is to be expected here at times. Temperatures should be a little above normal for most. This general northwest-southeast split in the weather is then likely to continue into the start of October.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 7 Oct 2014 to Tuesday 21 Oct 2014:

The broadly northwest-southeast split in weather conditions expected to become established for late September and early October is then showing signs of persisting into mid-October. This pattern would leave southern, central and eastern parts tending to see the best of the weather with conditions often fine and dry. Occasional bouts of rain should still be expected, and mist and fog patches may be a problem during morning rush hours but under fine weather it should feel pleasant. Further northwest, conditions are likely to be more unsettled with more frequent outbreaks of rain, perhaps accompanied by strong winds, temperatures here then often closer to average or perhaps even just below at times.

London weather

The city of London is the capital of England and is located in the South East of England on the river Thames.

London has been a major settlement for approximately two millennia and was originally founded by the Romans. As the capital of England, it is a leading metropolitan city and is one of the world's leading financial hubs.

London is made up of a number of boroughs, stretching from Hillingdon, Hounslow and Richmond in the West, across to Havering, Bexley and Barking & Dagenham in the East. Barnet and Enfield are on the northern edge of the city whilst Croydon, Sutton and Bromley are found in the south.

Unsurprisingly, London one of the world's top tourist cities and it is easy to see why. From fantastic shopping in Kensington & Chelsea through to sightseeing in the historic areas of Westminster, London has something for all tastes and budgets.

For many visitors, the main attraction in London is Buckingham Palace, home to the Queen and various members of the British Royal Family. It has served as the residence of British royals since 1837 and is still today the administrative centre for the Monarch and Royal Family. Hosting 775 rooms, the palace opens only 19 state rooms for tours during the summer, although these are decorated with some pieces from the royal collection and form the heart of the palace.

Sport is a huge part of London life, with Wembley Stadium hosting major events including the FA Cup final and every home England international football match. The city's two major cricket venues, Lords and The Oval, hold regular Test matches and in Newham, the Olympic Stadium played host to the 2012 Olympic Games. The city is also home to some of Europe's leading football clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

London is also at the heart of the tennis calendar every summer during the Wimbledon championships. Some of the world's finest players (and occasionally, the weather) have taken centre stage over the years at SW19 to create some of sports most iconic memories.

At the O2 Arena (formally known as the Millennium Dome), some of the world's leading names from the world of music, sport and entertainment wow the crowds whilst Leicester Square is synonymous with some of the world's best theatre productions.

Outdoor activities are also an important part of life in London and regular concerts and events are held at Hyde Park which, along with Kensington Gardens, features a memorial to the late Diana, Princess of Wales.
