Outlook for the UK over the next 6-30 days

UK Outlook for Wednesday 24 Dec 2014 to Friday 2 Jan 2015:

A band of cloud and rain is likely to be affecting many central parts of the UK at first on Christmas Eve, clearing the southeast later. Colder conditions then spreading to many areas, continuing into Christmas day, with some wintry showers across N areas. Probably becoming increasingly unsettled into the weekend, with the risk of persistent heavy rain, gales and also a risk of significant snow, this more likely across some northern parts. Conditions after Christmas likely to remain predominantly cold across the N, but with the chance of milder interludes across the far south. Otherwise the following week looks perhaps rather cold on the whole, with snow showers likely across many northern areas but milder, wetter interludes possible at times. Generally windy for many throughout.

UK Outlook for Saturday 3 Jan 2015 to Saturday 17 Jan 2015:

The most likely scenario for the coming New Year is for a continuation of changeable, and at times windy weather coming from the Atlantic with the wettest weather probably across western parts of the UK, and eastern parts most likely to see the best of any dry weather. In between the wetter periods there should be drier, brighter, and colder spells. Temperatures are most likely to be around or slightly below average for the time of year with overnight frosts and some snow expected, particularly over the high ground.

Glasgow information

Scotland's largest city, Glasgow, is located in the West Central Lowlands on the river Clyde. With a city council population approaching 600,000 - and almost double that figure living in the surrounding area - Glasgow is the third most populous city in the United Kingdom.

Glasgow has one of the largest concentrations of galleries, cinemas and theatres in the whole of Britain. The Theatre Royal is the base of Scottish Ballet and Scottish Opera, while venues such as King Tut's Wah Wah Hut and the Carling Academy have hosted some of the top names in music. Sports fans need look no further than the city's great football clubs. Alongside the lesser-known Partick Thistle you'll find Glasgow Celtic, first British winners of the European Cup, and Glasgow Rangers, seven-time domestic treble winners. Games between the 'Old Firm' as they are known are often passionate affairs and are keenly fought.

Glasgow can be one of the wettest locations in the UK during winter with an average of over 300mm of rain falling between the start of December and the end of February. Temperatures are colder than the UK average with maximums of 6 °C and minimums of 1 °C. Similarly sunlight hours are lower than average. During the last week of December 1995 temperatures fell as low as -20 °C at Glasgow airport. This unusually cold weather burst water pipes and resulted in severe flooding in unoccupied homes and commercial properties.

Temperatures in spring are usually around the UK average for Glasgow. March through to May sees daytime maxima rise from 8 °C to 15 °C. Low rainfall averages mean that late spring and early summer is often the driest time for Glasgow. Accumulation is around 221 mm, meaning rainfall is below the UK totals for spring months.

Summer temperatures in Glasgow are a little below the UK average but higher than the regional average due to the urban heat island effect. Expect highs of 19 °C in July. Rainfall accumulation starts to increase from August, and the number of days with rainfall greater than 1mm does as well.

Sunshine hours start to drop significantly from September down to a seasonal low of 51 hours in November. Autumn also sees the highest rainfall figures on average with almost double the amount of rain falling in October than June. Temperatures in the autumn months range from 9 to 16 °C, around the UK average.
