Clear intervals and snow showers, perhaps merging into longer spells of snow, with further moderate accumulations and drifting in the strong westerly winds. Widespread frost with icy patches. Minimum Temperature -3C.

Thursday:

A bright day with sunny spells, as wintry showers become largely confined to Dumfries and Galloway, with some lengthy spells of sunshine over the Borders. Westerly winds easing. Maximum Temperature 4C.

UK forecast for the next 5 days

Turning much colder through Wednesday with snow in the north.

Today:

Cloudy, mild start in the south with some rain, locally heavy and squally, before clearing by lunchtime. Much colder, brighter conditions follow with frequent sleet and snow showers in the north/northwest with some accumulations likely. Windy, gales in the north.

Tonight:

Windy night with frequent snow showers, locally thundery, across northern and northwestern parts. Scattered wintry showers elsewhere, these mainly in west. Clear spells allowing a frost away from western coasts.

Thursday:

Another cold day with sunny spells and sleet and snow showers. Across southern parts, however, snow primarily falling over hills. Strong winds, especially in the west, will accentuate the cold.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Sunshine and wintry showers Friday, mainly rain to low levels. Thereafter, colder northerly winds will bring snow showers to northern parts and windward coasts, but some may push well inland.

Outlook for the UK over the next 6-30 days

UK Outlook for Monday 2 Feb 2015 to Wednesday 11 Feb 2015:

The general cold feel to the weather will continue during the first week of February, as the northerly winds bring hail, sleet and snow showers to the country. Showers will be frequent across northern parts and may affect other coastal areas at times, with widespread overnight frost and ice too. There is a low probability of more widespread rain and snow over southwestern areas, early in the week. Strong northerly winds at first, with gales in places, will lead to a significant wind chill, this gradually easing. The driest and brightest weather will be across sheltered southern parts. There are signals for a change to less cold temperatures and spells of rain by next weekend, though there is still a risk of snow, frost and ice at times.

UK Outlook for Thursday 12 Feb 2015 to Thursday 26 Feb 2015:

It looks most likely that unsettled conditions will continue across much of the UK with temperatures closer to normal when compared to the start of February. This may be more obvious across parts of southern and western Britain where it might be a little wetter than average as spells of wind and rain make their way in from the Atlantic. However, there is the possibility of pressure building around the middle of the month bringing more settled conditions, particularly in the south.

Edinburgh information

The Scottish capital of Edinburgh is a city that is steeped in history. Recognised as a World Heritage Site in 1995, the city and its 5,000 listed buildings attract visitors from around the world. Primitive settlements first appeared in the area as early as the Bronze Age, and by the 12th Century there was an established settlement in the area.

The city is built on a series of ridges and volcanic rocks, the most famous of which is Castle Rock. Edinburgh Castle sits atop Castle Rock, at the end of the Royal Mile. The New Year's Eve celebration in Edinburgh, known as Hogmanay, is also one of the biggest across the world with 100,000 people attending the annual street party.

The average daytime maximum temperature in Edinburgh is 7 °C during winter - which is around the UK average. Rainfall is fairly low compared to other locations in Scotland and significantly lower than the UK average. Around 175 mm of rain falls on average in winter each year, with the most rainfall in January.

Initially in spring, average temperatures in Edinburgh are above the UK average, but as season progresses this evens out. Daytime maximums rise from 9 °C in March to close to 15 °C by May. May is also the sunniest month of the year with over 188 hours on average. Spring sees less rainfall than any other season in Edinburgh with accumulation of 160 mm.

The Royal Mile is the focal point of the annual Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the largest arts festival in the world, taking place across the city every August.

July is usually the warmest month in Edinburgh with mean temperatures approaching 20 °C; and the highest temperature ever recorded in Edinburgh was 31.4 °C on 4th August 1975. Edinburgh is situated among the sunniest place in Scotland. Whilst spring sees the sunniest month; on average sunshine hours are higher through the summer. On the eastern coast Edinburgh is sheltered from the rain-baring westerly winds. Days with rainfall more than 1mm are much lower than locations in western Scotland.

Temperatures start to fall from September by around 3 °C each month based on average daytime maxima. By November temperatures can drop as low as 4 °C. Days of rainfall greater than 1 mm are highest in the autumn months for Edinburgh and likewise the largest rainfall amounts usually fall between September and November.
